We have an Ongoing Three Part Goal for Harmonizing with the Local Environment |
HGI Green Plan
HARMONIZING WITH THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
We have an ongoing three part goal for harmonizing with the local environment of our facilities. They are:
- We have embarked on a gradual process of carrying out environmental assessments targeted at environmental protection, in line with the general directives set forth by the government and the regulations enforced by local authorities.
- Property and building is surrounded by abundant greenery via selection of types of trees and bushes with a view to harmonizing with the local plant ecology and carrying out appropriate environmental management.
- Ensuring that future construction work is not harmful to the environment.
We follow these guidelines whenever we make changes or additions to our facilities. Example; our Hi-Liter facility is built into a hillside, rather than high-marked on a knoll; this preserves our community's view shed.
PROTECTING THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
1. We are actively pursuing environmental efforts and activities at our power stations and utilities. In particular we are focusing our efforts on:
- Prevention of atmospheric pollution (measures to reduce emission & particulate matter)
- Maintenance of water quality
- Minimization of impact of warm water outflow
- Anti-noise, anti-vibration measures
- Monitoring of emissions at source; environmental monitoring; compliance with conditions of environmental protection agreements
2. Drawing up anti-disaster measures and conducting training so as to minimize the environmental impact of fires, earthquakes, etc.
MAKING THE BEST USE OF RESOURCES
Throughout our company we train our employees on how to reduce the use of natural resources and recycling. Our efforts include:
- Promotion of the recycling of waste matter including paper waste, cans and bottles
- Promotion of paperless office procedures via increased automation
- Utilize load-leveling equipment and generator aimed at leveling the electric load at the local utility.
- Encouragement of the setting of air-conditioning and heating furnace temperatures at appropriate levels so as to conserve energy
PRINTING RESPONSIBLY
We are proud to be a Forest Stewardship Council Certified (FSC) Printer and maintain the chain-of-custody certification throughout all four of our operating divisions. HGI Company has successfully met the strict guidelines for this certification that will allow us to track wood through the supply chain beginning with a certified forest to your final printed piece.
We use paper made only by environmentally responsible paper mills that have achieved one or all of the following forest certifications, FSC, SFI, PEFC, all of which designate that paper is coming from "well-managed" forests adhering to strict environmental and socioeconomic standards.
Our goal is for 10% of our pulp to come from recovered paper, and all of the rest from its own sustainable managed tree plantations, dramatically reducing the impact on the world's forests.
We also strive for environmental responsibility throughout the rest of our production process as well. Here are some examples:
- We utilize state-of-the art paper baling equipment to collect our paper waste in the most re-usable form.
- We offer water-based aqueous coating to protect your printed pieces. It provides a high-gloss surface that deters dirt and fingerprints and is friendlier to our environment than UV coatings and film lamination.
- All of our heat-set inks contain between 2-4% soybean oil.
- We are focused on reducing waste. By using top-grade paper with highly-trained press operators and pre-set press technology, we have considerably reduced the number "make-ready" sheets needed to run through the presses as we set up your printing project.
- We package our products with biodegradable padding materials instead of those that are annoying and harmful to the environment, such as petroleum-based foam "peanuts."
